How the “Monkey Mind” Causes Stress

In the Ten Minute Angelic Tea Prayer we discussed and discovered a way for you to enjoy a quiet moment.

This gives you a chance to take a deep reflective breath.

Let’s dive even deeper.

Your Monkey Mind is Causing Stress

The simplest way to describe mindful breathing is to focus on your breath: Inhale and exhale.

Let’s look at what happens when the brain is tired and stressed.

This metacognition distortion can be called the “Monkey-Mind”: Which means unsettled, restless, indecisive.  It can decrease attention spans, memory and the ability to adequately learn. Basically, this causes mental chaos and leaves you scrambling, anxious, and even possibly depressed.

Take a moment and think about it.

Negative Affects of Stress and the “Monkey Mind”

You are super tired, so you drink extra coffee or consume an energy drink. You have so much going on that you are drained and the thought of cooking dinner upsets you. So, you go through the drive thru and grab a quick bite to eat.  Lastly, you try to sleep with a belly full of fatty foods.

Agony happens, because you are tossing and turning, and can’t sleep.

In the morning you grab an energy drink or an extra shot of espresso in your morning coffee to give you energy from a lack of a restful night’s sleep.

Thus, the vicious cycle continues.

End Stress With Deep Breathing:

Let’s look at what deep breathing does to the brain.

  • Tension begins to diminish
  • Oxygen is released from your brain
  • Blood pressure drops
  • Endorphins are released
  • Releases toxins
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Increases energy
  • Improves clarity
  • Your body relaxes

So, imagine what 15-20 mins will do for you.

52 Mins of Focus

Some may say that they can work large amounts of time, and some may be able to “handle” longer work periods.

Let’s break this down some more. Research specifies that the cognitive mind works well for 52 mins and then needs a breather.

A breather can help increase your oxygen levels.  Upon which, you are better able to focus,  because your body and mind rested for a bit.

Positive Results

Let’s focuses on the totality and functionality of your mind. Your brain works well for about 52 mins. Then it needs a breather.

You are more functional, better able to think and produce the most amazing results when you have a calm, relaxed mind.

Wouldn’t you rather function at your best?

This can also help you breeze through your work in less time.

Now who doesn’t like that idea?

Please be aware that you are in control and not the ego.

Study Says: 

Recently, there was another study conducted that states that workers are less productive after meditation while working.  What the study did not include was on overall basis on how the “Monkey Mind” can create more stress and anxieties; but after meditation, workers were able to function in a manner that was more productive. The ego may continue to whine and procrastinate; how you choose to deal with your ego can create a peaceful or stressful situation.

And I can hear, but Natasha I work well under pressure. And I ask do you really? Take a look back at something that you were working on. Does this gleam YAHOO, super success or Uh oh, how’d I miss that…

Win – Win 

Now look at this from a positive standpoint.  You took a break with deep breathing exercises. Now, look at how by slowing the mind, your body was able to intake more oxygen. This helped provide a way to calm the “Monkey-Mind,”  you to be  more relaxed and better functional.

To me that’s a win-win.

17 seconds of deep breathing:

Sit or Stand with your elbows slightly back.

Inhale as if you are breathing in the aroma of flower or cooking food for the count of 7 (mouth closed-inhaling through your nostrils)  and then hold for the count of 4.

Exhale as if you are blowing away a dandelion or bubble for the count of 6 with your mouth open.

Easey Peasy!

Calm Patience 

Please be patient with yourself. This takes time to readjust your body; especially if you are not used to deep breathing.

Use your cell’s timer.

Begin with 1 minute of 17 seconds of deep breathing, That is three rounds or 51 seconds.

Your body will love you for this!

Work your way up to 3 mins; then 10 and so on.

Hey maybe you’ll get to 17 seconds of deep breathing in 17 mins.

WOW, calm, clear body and mind. AMAZING!! 

Quiet Reflection 

Try not think of anything else during your deep breathing.

Now, if your mind wanders, as it may, that’s okay. Just bring yourself back and begin again.

Cognitive distortion may happen; it is  a learned and taught behavior pattern. It takes time to un-do a life long habit and re-establish a new one.

RE- It’s all Latin to Me: 

Take this moment to ponder and reflect upon you.

The re- prefix in latin means again.

Rest

Re-store = a place where goods are kept

Re-view= see

Re-flect = bend or curve

If you are like me, then you are an empath. If you have stumbled upon or discovered this blog, you are an empath.

What is an empath? An empath is someone who can feel the affects of other’s energies. This is not just a highly sensitive individual; this goes much deeper. It affects you on all levels. Empaths can feel physical, spiritually, emotional and mental energies. They do not necessarily read minds, but they can sure feel stuff. The good, bad and ugly stuff.

How does this Look

Empaths are often quiet achievers and introverts. They often feel drained and exhausted when they are out and about. This is an empath who has not yet learned to protect and clear themselves from other’s energies that they absorbed.

There can be many misunderstandings towards an empath. They may seem standoffish, distant, blocking and hiding away. This is an empath who has not learned how to better handle their gift.

Being in a mall, grocery store takes much effort and sometimes just plain wears you out.

Some cannot stand to see violence in anything: life, movies, video games, songs.

World Energy Concerns

When things happen in the world, emapths are closely tied to world energy. Viewing devastating news and occurrences is difficult. Be mindful of social media. As an empath you need to identify what stresses you and be okay with telling others no thank you.

Being an empath helps your intuitive gift as far as helping others, but do not forget to help you first. It is like the oxygen mask on the airplane; you need to cover you first, then you can assist; but recognize when you need to rest or even when you have to walk away and be okay with it.

Are There Benefits

Often empaths are working with people, in nature, or with animals. These are the tireless teachers, caretakers and stewards of the earth.

They are usually great imaginative storytellers and are inquisitively expanding their minds all of the time with an intense quest for knowledge.

Just because they may be at home does not mean that they stop. Their overly active minds just keep going. Which can cause them burnouts and a need for downtime and rest.

Usually they are creative and self-expressive in writing, singing, music, art and such.

They are the listeners of life. Poof, you are in the grocery store line and you know all about everyone in line; it seems as if everywhere you go, someone pours out their heart and soul to you. You smile and walk away.

How to Shield Your Energy

  1. Recognize that you are an empath.
  2. Drop the energy vampires, negative naysayers and narcissists  (an energy vampire is a person who steals your energy by arguing, belittling or criticizing; or constant complaining ( you feel drained to be around this person/people).
  3. Place a white shield of angelic light around you before you leave your home and/or spray yourself with an essential oil.
  4. Add positive energy into your living/work space.
  5.  Wear a crystal. Go to a crystal store; hang out near the crystals and let a crystal choose you. (I am known to tuck these in my pants pockets or bra).
  6. Place crystals around your living/work space.
  7. Upon returning home drink a glass of alkaline water and/or spray an essential oil .
  8. Take a shower or bath.
  9. Place live plants in your living space. (African violets are amazing.)
  10. Be mindful of your thoughts; replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
  11. Meditate. Let it Go, Let it Flow.
  12. Seek assistance from an energy healer.

How Traversing Your Inner Terrene Isn’t as Bad as You Expect

You are your world.

There is nothing that does not affect your energy being.

The world around you may be falling apart, but that does not mean that you have to take on others issues.

We all have issues. No one is exemplified from having issues. So, what do you do about it.

Learning To traverse Your Terrene

Take for example that you are a world. Your human form is a living, thriving metropolis.  Everything  that you do, eat, think and believe affects you. This can be both positive and negative.  You will have bad days; no one can’t tell you that you can’t nor won’t. There are days where it seems like getting out of bed and showering is a major feat. So, by golly celebrate.

Once upon a time during a long-term illness getting out of bed and getting dressed was a major accomplishment. I was over the moon, if I could also run a hairbrush through my easily tangled locks.

Choose your battles

No one knows exactly what you are going through or what you are working on. It is for you to know and work through.  With that being said, it is also not okay to get stuck in a rut and use excuses. We all have things happen to us, things we’ve been through. These bumps help us to grow and to thrive even more powerfully.

Let Go of Expectations

Shit Happens Let it Go Magical Blessings Authentic VoiceLife happens. Shit happens and things can get skewed and then ya wake up one day and say oh hell no. So, let today, be that day. Let go of the contrived notion that you have to be perfect, have all the answers and be on point.

Allow yourself to make mistakes. If it happens; it happens and you’ve learned a valuable lesson. Now take that knowledge and be a powerhouse. Help yourself and by helping you, caring for you, loving you; you are also helping others who may not be able to do so.

Show up in a Tutu 

Aha, caught your attention. What? Why? You do not have to literally show up in a tutu; I love using metaphors.  But, who am I to say that you cannot show up in a tutu if you so choose to do so. Go for it. Color you hair, get that tat, write the book, sing that song, paint that painting. The list goes on and on.

Years ago co-workers breathed a sigh of relief after another unfortunate round of belittlement from admin. A co-worker leaned next to my ear and said, “It’s about time you showed up!”  This sent chills down my spine and something internally clicked and the previous drama was silenced and a viable solution was rendered. Why, because I showed up and offered my wisdom and advice.  Everyone benefited from me gracing my worth and speaking up.

Speak Even if Your Voice Quivers

Go for it. Say it out loud. What is the worst that will happen. Yep, your ego will fill your head with nonsense that may not even occur. So, go for it. Speak up, show up and be fabulous.

  • But, let’s turn this inward.
  • Close your eyes.
  • What is something that is driving you batty about others?
  • Now, turn this to you. Inhale and exhale 3 times.
  • Where is this also showing up in your life?
  • Write this down.
  • Sit with this for a moment and allow your mind to wander.
  • Speak out loud, write this in a journal as if you are having a dialogue with yourself. Most of all get it out in the open. Acknowledging this will not only help you to identify the inner turmoil; but is also lead you to your healing path.

Get raw and real. Do not hold back. Yes, it seems scary to see you behaving like another who annoys you; then again the most important is the ability to heal you! The more raw you are with yourself, the deeper you will explore and find a way to shine the light on it. Spirit will take it from here; however, please give Spirit permission. Due to ego free will, they needs your permission to take it away. Poof, gone; it is no more and you have gained knowledge to traverse your inner terrene.  Use this as much as you need.
